Get That Glow!
BY KUDI MARADZIKA
It's quarter to summer (or quarter to spring depending on which part of the world you're in). Either way we all want the same thing. Delicious, sun kissed glowing skin that will make you look like Jennifer Lopez' twin.
Here are a few hot products I have personally tried over the past few weeks that I have been very impressed with. These are all natural skin friendly products with no artificial gunk and if they work for super sensitive and dry skin like mine, they will certainly work for you!
'My, my, my, what soft supple skin you have!'
This is not a paid post by the way. These are simply products that have worked for me and that I can vouch for personally.
Skoon Skin Sips:
'My, my, my, what soft supple skin you have!'. This product impresses with its velvety texture and how easily it sits on your skin. Non greasy and super moisturizing, this serum contains fulvic acid, hyaluronic acid and Vitamin B5. Fulvic acid improves the skin's absorption of antioxidants and electrolytes, and has become a very popular anti-aging property that slows down free radical damage. Hyaluronic acid literally makes your skin glow and drastically improves the skin's texture.
This product is certified organic and made from natural essentials. The mini pot retails for R200 (about USD 15) which is an incredible bargain for a product with these many quality ingredients.

Dermalogica's Skin Resurfacing Cleanser.
Intensive Moisture Balance.
Always a winner, Dermalogica's products never disappoint. The Skin Resurfacing Cleanser is a great light exfoliator to use twice a week for smooth and ultra clean skin. It also contains Vitamin E, lactic acid and alpha hydroxy acid that brighten your skin. These properties are also known to increase your skin's ability to produce collagen. The more collagen the firmer and more supple your skin. Yes please!
The intensive moisture balance is super-rich phytonutrient moisturizer designed to combat dry skin. Stabilized Vitamin C helps to smooth the appearance of dry lines and skin damage, leaving skin soft and supple. Antioxidant enzyme Superoxide Dismutase, Vitamins A and E, and Ginkgo all help to repair prematurely aging skin.
"The more collagen the firmer and more supple your skin. Yes please!"
The above can be used inn combination with Dermalogica's Barrier Repair, (which I use as a primer).
Dermalogica products are known to be pricey but bottom line is that they work. I went from monthly breakouts in varsity to a clear glowing complexion when I started using these products.
Be prepared to spend about R 500 to R 60, (US$ 43 to US$ 60) for each of these products. The bonus is that they last about 3 to 4 months. I'm not saying you should go and spend all your money on this. I am saying that these products work and are an investment to your skin care routine.
Dr Haushka's Revitalising Mask.
I've obsessed over this product before here and for a good reason. I can leave this on my skin for 20 minutes and I can already see the effects, which is great if you don't have a lot of time! It says to use this once or twice a week but I sometimes sneak in a third application for an extra glow. This product has a lot of natural extracts such as quince seed, anthyllis and chamomile extracts. These all help soothe the skin and give the skin a natural glow. It also contains jojoba and germ oils for soft, supple skin.
I was lucky to get this as a gift, but this retails for R 700 (US$ 56), pricey? Yes, but one tube will literally last a year! True story!
Skoon Rosehip C+
Skoon preaches the truth once again with this one! This is the perfect serum to use before bed as it contains Vitamin C and Squalane. I know right, sq-what? Squalane is a property as hot as Dr Jart's Tiger Grass balm. Squalane is 100% saturated fat like coconut oil..which is a good thing. Its produced naturally by our bodies and is also found in plants. Squalane is super moisturising and soothing. If I could get this stuff on a face mask I would...you hear that Skoon? This also has a tonne of natural seed oils for added moisture.
The mini pot of this product is a marvelous bargain at R 250 (US$ 14). If you can't get this product, do get a product with some squalane. It's worth it.

Deity Skin Turmeric & Activated
Charcoal Face Mask
I've written about Deity Skin before here. This product contains kaolin clay, activated charcoal and lavender essential oil and is a great exfoliant. I use this once a week to give my skin extra zhoozh and glow. It's also a great mask to have on in the steam room at the gym! Its detoxifying and instantly brightens your complexion. It can get a little messy in application but all the goodness it brings counters this completely.
"Use this once a week to giveyour skin extra zhoozh and glow".
This product is R 230 (US$ 17) which is once again a bargain for a product this good.

Garnier Refreshing Toner
Some people don't need toner, some people hate toner and find it turns their foreheads into a shiny mess by lunchtime. Toners can be very harsh on the skin, (which is why I always use mine a touch diluted with a wet cotton round). Garnier's Refreshing Toner is super light and not harsh at all. This paraben-free toner is also great for removing make-up.
Whether you use toner or not, this light toner is something you can get in any drugstore, Clicks or Boots and retails at a super reasonable R 70 (US$ 6).
Exfoliating Brush + Sunscreen + Water.
Nothing gets you a summer / spring glow quicker than these three things. An exfoliating brush will drastically change the effectiveness of your bi-weekly exfoliating. We all know about how important good old H20 is but most people with darker skin tones (myself included) really don't use enough sunscreen. Sunscreen will keep your black from cracking for years so reach out for a bottle and slather some onto your skin before applying your primer or make-up.
